Some Hotpoint washing machines made between 2007 – 2009 could give an electric shock, and are the subject of an official safety notice by the manufacturer. It seems they were alerted by BBC Watchdog, but, on becoming aware of the potential issue it was risk assessed under General Product Safety Regulations and was classified as "very low" risk..
So it was concluded that no direct consumer notification was required. However, they have had a change of heart, or circumstances have forced them to do something now because they go on to say that since then they have identified a way to reduce the risk from very low to extremely low.
The safety notice gives no details on exactly how an electric shock could be received, and lists no model numbers at all. The lack of model numbers could mean that all Hotpoint washing machines manufactured between these dates are affected. However, Hotpoint say that risk is very small. If you have a washing machine that could have been manufactured around then make sure you check that yours is not affected and follow the manufacturer’s instructions if it is – check your Hotpoint appliance now
The hotpoint safety check site is not working. Can you provide a list? I don’t want to call a premium rate number for the privilege of checking if they sold me a dangerous appliance.
Hello Louise. Try checking again. The site is working for me so it was probably a temporary issue. There isn’t a list, they have a form where you need to enter your model and serial number to check. They are available behind the door of the washing machine.
