Where is the model or serial number on a fridge or freezer?

💡
Quick Answer

The model and serial number on most modern fridges, freezers, and fridge-freezers is on a label inside the appliance – usually on the inner side wall of the fridge compartment near the salad drawer, or on the inner wall of the freezer compartment. If it cannot be found inside, check behind a removable kick-strip at the base, and as a last resort on the back panel.

Where to Look First

Appliance type Most likely location What to do
Fridge Inner side wall, next to or behind the salad drawer Remove the salad drawer fully to expose the label
Freezer Inner side wall, anywhere inside the compartment Open the door and look around all interior surfaces. Remove the bottom drawer(s) if necessary
Fridge-freezer Inside the fridge compartment side wall, or inside the freezer section Check both compartments – the label may be in either

Rating plates are typically silver or white and located on the left-hand side wall inside the compartment. The plate will show the model number, serial number, and other technical specifications including the climate class rating.

If You Cannot Find It Inside

  1. Check behind the base kick-strip.

Many fridges and freezers have a removable plastic strip at the very bottom of the appliance. This clips or snaps off easily. A label is sometimes concealed behind it.

  2. Pull the appliance out and check the back panel.

Older appliances in particular often have the rating plate on the rear. This is the least convenient location and is now less common on modern appliances, but if the label is not visible inside the compartment or behind the kick-strip, the back is the remaining location to check.

Take care when moving a fridge or freezer – they are heavy and have no wheels. Place a towel or protective mat under the front feet before sliding. See our guide on how to pull appliances out safely for technique.

  3. Contact the manufacturer if still not found.

In rare cases a label may be missing or illegible. The manufacturer can supply model and serial information if given the purchase date and retailer details. For manual downloads that require the model number, see our appliance user manuals page which links to all major manufacturer support sites.

⚠️
While the appliance is out – clean the back and vents

Blocked air vents at the back of a fridge or freezer caused by accumulated fluff and debris have been identified as a significant fire risk. Pulling the appliance out is a useful opportunity to vacuum the rear condenser coils and vents. Do not push the appliance back against the wall without leaving the clearance space specified in the instruction manual.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the serial number on a fridge freezer?

On most modern fridge-freezers, the serial number is inside the fridge compartment on the inner side wall – often near or behind the salad drawer. It may alternatively be in the freezer compartment. If it cannot be found in either compartment, check behind the removable plastic kick-strip at the base. As a last resort, the label may be on the rear panel, though this is less common on modern appliances.

What does the rating plate show?

The rating plate shows the model number, serial number, manufacture date, voltage and current specifications, and climate class rating. The climate class is important for confirming whether the appliance is suitable for installation in a garage or cold room. See our guide on fridge and freezer climate classes.

Can I find my model number if the label is missing or illegible?

Contact the manufacturer with any information available – purchase date, retailer, and any part of the model number still visible. Most manufacturers can help trace the specific model from this information. For safety notices requiring the model number to check whether an appliance is affected, the manufacturer’s customer service line is the appropriate contact.

Annie Bygrave 2 replies Have searched high and low for the serial number on my Fridgemaster freezer but it seems to be nowhere. Looked on absolutely every surface inside - no labels. Looked on every surface outside including the back. There are numbers on the compressor, but they do not start with S/N so not sure if any of them are the serial number or not. Have looked through the instruction manual and at the stick-on A+ energy label provided. Nothing! I want to fill in the guarantee form but can't without this number. Have since read online that the Fridgemaster company has gone bust so maybe the serial number label has been removed (does this mean there is no guarantee anymore?). I bought the freezer only last week!! If I had known I would have bought a different brand. Any advice re serial number location or on the guarantee situation would be very welcome.

Hi Annie. It shouldn’t be that hard to find, so maybe someone removed it, although that would be highly unusual. If the manufacturer has gone bust the retailer is the only one you can turn to unless you bought it by credit card in which case you ma be entitled to a refund under section 75

Check out my articles here and consider taking advice from consumer groups like Which? or CAB

This article is about retailers but should be similar for manufacturers – Buying appliances online: What if the retailer goes bust?

Thank you so much for your reply! What I finally did was try to register for the warranty online using one of the numbers on the compressor. The online registration actually accepted what I put, so either by chance I hit upon the right number, or their website’s auto checking is crap. Either way I have received a certificate of warranty from Fridgemaster, so I’m happy. Whether or not I could claim on the warranty later if I need to is another matter but fingers crossed I won’t have to. Thanks again for the support
all the best

Hi Alan. Normally no there’s no manufacturer details on the rating plate. It would normally say what brand it is on the control panel. I would search google for the model numbers as that would usually bring up details. The model number is usually only several numbers and letters and not like the ones you quoted. Try to find other numbers to search.

Janet Gibbins 1 reply Hi Fridge freezer in caravan found the serial code sticker with the information on, but the bit where the serial number is on has been rubbed off as its sticky back paper with it on. And i cannot find any makers name either but need to find it, as we need a spare salad draw. Can you help or advise where else to look. Will try to get it out next time we go up to the van.

Hello Janet. Unless the serial number is replicated on the back of the fridge freezer you are probably stuck. All of the places where it’s possible to have a serial number are listed in the article above. I presume you have looked everywhere except the sides and the back which you will be able to do once you’ve got it out. But like I say if there isn’t anything else there then you will be unable to identify it.

Paul Dorset 1 reply Hi. I've just bought a Hisense FV341N4EC1 free standing freezer and trying to locate the serial number. I have a batch number, a 7 digit number and a very long barcode number (containing numbers and letters). Any idea which is the serial number as none say "s/n"

Hello Paul. I would guess the 7 digit number. Depending on what you want it for they may need the batch number too. A barcode is unlikely to contain any user information.

Gordon M 1 reply Any idea where the serial number is on AEG larder fridges? The only label I can find at all is a paper one on the back which starts with the model number (925052057) and then continues with another 15 digits?

Cath 0 replies Thanks you very helpful as Hoover Freezers have no guidance where to find identifying details. However HOW DAFT for them to put them beside the bottom drawer. The restricted space outside the freezer together with my bi-focal glasses made it a difficult operation!!

Andy Trigg (Whitegoodshelp) 0 replies The model number should be on the same label as the serial number. My article describes all possible places a model / serial number could be so if you can't find it there's sadly no other place to suggest looking. If it doesn't actually say, "model number" you could try searching Google for any number you suspect could be a model number.

Arcanus 0 replies Similar problem to Annie above with the Fridgemaster Freezer bought this last week. The stickers show batch numbers and other numbers which don't state any are the s/n. Luckily I still had the box (albeit in the recycling bin) and sure enough, there it was! None of the numbers on the stickers on the appliance actually matched it either.
