Integrated appliance or not

💡

Quick Answer

Integrated (built-in) appliances have one advantage over freestanding: they are hidden behind a cupboard door. Against this are higher prices, a much smaller choice of models, smaller capacities in some categories, more difficult installation, and significantly harder and more expensive repairs. For anyone with flexibility on kitchen layout, freestanding appliances offer considerably better value and practicality.

Integrated appliances are a popular choice in fitted kitchens. The case for choosing them is strong on aesthetics – but it is worth understanding the practical trade-offs before committing to an integrated installation.

Integrated vs Freestanding: The Key Differences

✅ Advantages of integrated appliances

  • Concealed behind a kitchen cupboard door – aesthetically cleaner look in a fitted kitchen
  • Ovens and dishwashers are available in comparable numbers to freestanding models

❌ Disadvantages of integrated appliances

  • Significantly higher purchase price than equivalent freestanding models
  • Much smaller range of models to choose from – particularly for washing machines and fridge-freezers
  • Washing machines may have smaller drum capacities due to installation space constraints
  • More complex to install correctly
  • Repairs are more difficult, more time-consuming, and therefore more expensive – some independent engineers charge a premium or will not attend integrated appliances at all
  • When the appliance needs replacing, the cupboard door fitting may not be compatible with a different brand or model

Why Integrated Appliances Are Harder to Repair

An engineer attending a freestanding washing machine or dishwasher can typically move and access it within minutes. An integrated appliance must be unscrewed from its cabinet fixings, the door fitting disconnected, and the appliance carefully extracted without damaging the surrounding kitchen units, flooring, or the appliance itself. This process can take 20 minutes or more before the repair has even started.

Reinstating the appliance correctly – with the door panel properly aligned and the fixings secure – adds further time. If anything is scratched, damaged, or misaligned in the process, disputes over responsibility arise.

Poor original installation compounds the problem

A significant proportion of integrated appliance call-outs are complicated by poor original installation – the appliance may be difficult to extract because it was installed incorrectly or because subsequent kitchen modifications have made removal harder. See our guide on appliances stuck behind a tiled floor for a common example of this problem.

For these reasons, repair charges for integrated appliances are generally higher than for equivalent freestanding models. Some independent repair engineers do not attend integrated appliances at all. When booking a repair for an integrated appliance, confirm beforehand that the company will work on it and what any additional charge may be.

Choice and Availability

The choice of integrated models is significantly smaller than freestanding in most appliance categories. Washing machines in particular have a much wider freestanding range – both in terms of brands, drum capacities, and features. Fridge-freezers show a similar pattern. Dishwashers and ovens tend to have a more comparable range between integrated and freestanding formats.

When an integrated appliance needs replacing, the replacement must fit the existing cabinet space and door fitting. If the original brand no longer makes a compatible model, a replacement from another brand may require kitchen cabinet modifications.

Build Quality: Is It Different?

The core appliance inside an integrated housing is generally the same machine as the manufacturer’s freestanding equivalent. The quality of the mechanical and electronic components should not be materially different. The additional cost of integrated models reflects the housing, door fitting hardware, and the smaller market scale – not improved internal build quality.

For buying guidance on the appliance itself, see our guides on which is the best washing machine to buy and how long a washing machine should last – the brand and price tier advice applies equally to integrated models.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are integrated appliances worth the extra cost?

Only if the hidden appearance is genuinely important to you and you are prepared to accept the practical trade-offs. The premium over an equivalent freestanding model is substantial and is not reflected in better build quality – the core appliance is typically the same. The choice of models is more limited, repairs are more difficult and expensive, and replacing the appliance in future may require kitchen modifications if a compatible replacement model is not available.

Are integrated washing machines as good as freestanding ones?

The internal components – motor, drum, pump, and electronics – are generally the same as the manufacturer’s freestanding equivalent. The integrated housing adds cost without improving the machine itself. The main practical difference is the smaller drum capacity available in some integrated models due to installation space constraints, and the significantly more limited choice of models compared to freestanding.

Will engineers repair integrated appliances?

Most will, but some independent engineers decline to attend integrated appliances due to the difficulty and time involved in extraction. Repair charges are typically higher for integrated appliances than freestanding equivalents. Confirm when booking that the company will work on integrated appliances and ask whether there is any additional charge for the installation type.

Andy Trigg (Whitegoodshelp) 0 replies I recently installed a new Fridge freezer, washing machine and dishwasher into my son's new kitchen after they understandably decided they wanted all their appliances hidden. My son and I took many hours and had many problems to overcome before we got them installed with the kitchen doors in front and the kick strips in place. It was worth the effort, they look great, but they are NOT easy to install and I would not fancy getting them out to repair in the future.
