Washing machine door hinged on the right

FAQs Most washing machine doors are hinged on the left. This means that the door closes into a catch on the right. This is okay for most people. But some people find that the way that their kitchen is configured means that they really could do with the washing machine door opening on the other side. That is, hinged on the right with door catch on the left.

Unfortunately there are very few washing machines that have a different door arrangement. The only washing machines I’m aware of that have the door hinge on the right are Miele washing machines.

I’ve also seen a Hotpoint Aqualtis range that appears to be hinged on the right. The Aqualtis range is the washing machine with a very large door which incorporates the control panel.

Can you move the door hinge to the other side?

You can’t change the door hinge around on a freestanding washing machine.

The vast majority of washing machines have left hinged doors. They cannot be changed around. I can’t think of a logical reason why they are hinged like that but they are.

The only white goods appliances where you can change the door around are refrigeration appliances. This is because they don’t use a door catch, they just use a magnetic seal. It would be impractical to design a washing machine with two door catches, two door locks and two sets of hinges to enable you to swap the doors around.

If you know of any other washing machines that are hinged on the right please add a comment to this article. Check the comments below for further discussion. Some other examples of washing machine’s being hinged on the right have been pointed out.

  1. I have found another, Hotpoint, AQXXL129, right hinged large door but would like any other makes if there are any!
    Thank you for interesting site.

  2. I have tenants in my flat in London whilst I’m abroad. The washing machine has broken down.
The door of a replacement HAS to hinge on the right. They all hinge on the left.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

  3. Can anyone help with locating a washing machine with the door hinged on the right (London based) new or reconditioned, anything. I have tenants in my flat and the machine has broken down and needs replacing urgently. A model at John Lewis is way over my budget at over a thousand pounds.
Anything at all at a sensible price with a right handed door!
Thank you very much. Carol Dacre.

  4. Is it possible to replace an LG washing machine door to hinge on the right rather than on the left? It is so inconvenient to be opening on the wrong side in a small laundry room area!

  5. I’ve not heard of a washing machine where you can change the door hinge round. It can’t be done because the door catch needs to operate a door lock when it closes for safety reasons and there’s no way a manufacturer is going to be able to make it possible.

  6. Our old Bosch WFK2801 hinged on the right. It’s now deceased and we too are looking for a new machine with right hand hinge. Manufacturers really do need to address this gap in the market!
