mark stoneman 1 reply hi everyone, yes our AEG dishwasher caught fire 09/10/2014 at 3.30 in the morning. luckily my wife heard what seemed like aearthquake/rumble so woke up. it was then the sounds of cracking when she said something is not right so i went to investigate down sairs when i found our kitchen alight , flames and smoke from the dishwasher had caught the kitchen bench alight and smoke was halfway down the room, i got everyone out of the house and was instructed to wait for the fire brigaide but they were 15 mins away so manged to get buckets of water and get it out. our house and family were saved but how could this faulty product still be out there and we as homeowners not informed of the risks to our families and property. i am lucky i have an amazing insurance company NZI that along with our loss adjuster (peter macintyre) who are helping us get our house back in order, this will take 2 months due to the damage. AEG need to be held reponsible before someone gets killed. mark stoneman

Hello Mark, thanks for sharing your story. That’s stuff of nightmares and sounds like you were very lucky. Can I ask was it on at the time? And is it definitely one of the models affected by this safety notice?

Amanda Edwards 1 reply My AEG Favorit has just caught fire. I have just seen from your very informative website here that this model was recalled in March 2008 (I bought it in October 2007). Luckily I was standing right next to it when I heard popping and hissing and streams of smoke coming from the top of the front panel,. I unplugged it..... We usually put it on at night. My son sleeps directly above it. Had I not been there my house could have burnt down. I dread to think of the consequences. What I want to know is WHY did Electrolux not contact every person who bought these? I bought mine from a local Electrical store, my address is printed on the top of the receipt and the model number is on the receipt. Someone could have been killed. This is shocking and unforgivable.

Hello Amanda. As far as I know manufacturers only contact people who sent their guarantee registration forms in or registered online, which is why I recommend always registering a new appliance. Other than that they just issue the safety notices and hope people will see them.

Sue 1 reply I purchased a John Lewis dishwasher in 2007. In 2008 I received a safety recall letter re the possibility of the electrical connection overheating and catching fire. A engineer called and said my machine was perfectly ok. Now in 2011 my dishwasher blew up!! Luckily I was at home when the dishwasher was on. I heard a loud bang and when I ran in the kitchen there was smoke coming from the back of the dishwasher and the plug socket was burnt black. I am now waiting for John Lewis to come back to me to see if they will replace the dishwasher rather than fix it under my extended warantee as I no longer feel it is safe to use if it is repaired. It was a frightening experience and I am only grateful we were at home at the time. It could have been even worse, we could have been asleep when this happend!!!

Hello Sue: If the engineer said the appliance wasn’t affected by the safety notice it could simply be that an unrelated fault has now occurred. Regrettably, appliances do catch fire for various reasons, not always due to a specific design fault – Fire risks in appliances

However, I couldn’t rule out the possibility of the engineer having made a mistake (although I feel it’s unlikely) or even the possibility that there is another design flaw but if the plug socket was burned black it could even be that something went wrong inside the plug or wall socket. Please let us know what happens.

Martine 0 replies We have and AEG Electrolux 40760 purchased in 2008. I received the recall letter in 2008 or 2009 not sure! I requested the unit was replaced and not just the part which they agreed to. Now 5 yrs on we are smelling a electrical burning smell when it is in use??? Not sure if we should pay the high price of a technical call out or just dump it?? Will phone AEG on Monday and see what they say but sure as it's not under warranty anymore they won't do much. Any suggestions? This seems to be a common problem with there machines!!

Whitegoodshelp (Andy Trigg) 0 replies Is it a JLDWW1201 dishwasher? John Lewis are usually pretty good with consumer rights, can't think of anyone better, but out of guarantee has nothing to do with it. Of course lots of faults develop out of the guarantee and we need to pay to have them fixed but if the fault is an inherent fault, a design fault, or a fault which has developed because the product wasn't durable enough (depends on specific circumstances such as purchase cost and usage) then under the sale of goods act we may be entitled to a free repair or replacement from the retailer. Read my articles here - Out of guarantee doesn’t always mean you should pay | Is the sale of goods act too hard on retailers?

Allen 0 replies My dishwasher branded John Lewis but apparently made by Electrolux just made a fizzing noise then started belching black smoke. I disconnected the power and the damage is contained within the control panel at the top of the door. It is some months out of warranty and JL say it's my problem to get it fixed. Had I not been standing next to it waiting for the last 8 minutes of the wash cycle to finish the whole house could have burned down. The black smoke was horrid and my eyes and throat are burning JL just washed their hands because it is out of warranty.

LizMUK 0 replies We have the Zanussi-Electrolux zdf601s and we have experienced the exact same problem this evening with a bad burning smell and smoke suddenly coming from the front of the machine. The machine would have been bought in 2007 but I wanted to highlight that our serial number is - 73040128, just slightly higher than those mentioned above.

Washerhelp 0 replies WMUser: Yes I think there are more serious faults with white goods appliances than ever before. Washing machines exploding, fridges exploding, appliance catching fire - it's totally ridiculous.

alejandro 0 replies here I am again. after checked the situation and fight with Electrolux - AEG Spain I could investigate by my own and the problem is that the manufacturers are using less copper for the electricity cables, switchers are not enough valid for resist electricity and connexions and plastics have bad quality: all to cut expenses but not realizing that the user are suffering the risks

WMUser 0 replies Is it me or are there more and more cases of faulty appliances with very dangerous faults? Fires, broken glass doors on washing machines and so on! Why does this happen so often now? Are the parts or appliances made in China or if not, just made very poorly to be sold at stupidly low prices that consumers demand? Having read pages like this one, I would NEVER leave a dishwasher, washing machine or TV switched on when I'm away from home for any length of time or asleep. The multi-plugs to the TV, DVD player etc. get switched off at the wall when not in use. Take no chances!
