Children Do you use fabric softener on children’s sleepwear? This is a short article and warning about safety regarding children and flame resistant clothing – although it applies to any flame resistant clothing.

Whilst researching a different article I was studying the back of a detergent packet and found a warning about using fabric softener on some children’s clothes. It’s a fairly obscure warning, but fabric softener can reduce the effectiveness of flame resistance in children’s clothes. So just bear that in mind.

Here is the warning

From Dreft: We do caution against using any fabric softener on children’s sleepwear or other garments labelled as flame resistant – as it may reduce flame resistance.   ”

It’s maybe not so critical these days with most people having central heating, but many people still have some form of naked flame in the home. There’s even the possibility of kids playing with matches, so it’s better to be safe than sorry. As far as I’m aware most children’s sleepwear and baby clothes are supposed to be flame resistant, or as the official term goes, “flame retardant”. Note this doesn’t mean flame-proof.

Whilst on the subject of fabric softener (conditioner), did you know that it also partially waterproofs towels. This reduces their ability to absorb water and dry us. Check out this link for several of my interesting facts and tips regarding fabric softener
