White Goods Blog:

Topical commentary, reviews, free advice, and special offers from the world of white goods in the UK

About Me

I’m Andy Trigg (47) with 30 years experience in the white goods trade (weighted towards washing machines). I’m giving away free help and advice. I’m also writing in a non technical and hopefully entertaining way about anything related to white goods in the UK including product reviews.

My aim is to be balanced and fair, as well as to give my advice freely and responsibly. Initially motivated by entirely altruistic motives, after several years I found myself in the position of being able to earn some money for my efforts. I believe this is because people trusted my advice enough to utilise carefully selected and on-topic affiliates on my sites. The challenge of proving to any (understandable) sceptics that my advice remains as honest and sincere as before is especially motivating.

I try to be open about affiliate links (which are used very sparingly) particularly if I give a direct recommendation. I’ve no wish to disguise adverts as apparently free advice. My policy is to only recommend products that I would recommend anyway - regardless of whether I have the ability to use an affiliate link or not, and not to use affiliate links (even though they are available to me) to products or stores that I don’t personally believe in or wouldn’t happily use myself.

This blog is hosted on Whitegoodshelp which is a container site for several new white goods sites hoping to emulate the success of my first site Washerhelp.

9 out of 10 people research online before buying

A recent article in a trade magazine for white and brown goods (ERT) reported on research from a study commissioned by a well known domestic appliance manufacture. Their results showed that 9 out of 10 shoppers are now researching products on the Internet before buying, and 74% of people said they would be influenced by comments and reviews online. 83% said they trust online consumer reviews and blogs.

Although no surprise (because I do all my own pre-purchasing research online) it is a reminder to me of the potential influence sites like Washerhelp and this white goods Blog can have these days and it inspires me to keep writing unbiased and balanced articles on white goods.

To research all white goods appliances as well as most other consumer goods and issues, and read the latest reviews and best buy recommendations Which? Online offer a 30 day trial which I recommend. I've been a member for over a year now and wouldn't buy anything without consulting Which? first. Mind you, I like to think Whitegoodshelp is also a good resource for researching white goods :-)

Best by miles, site for sensible, helpful information.
Enables you to cut through all the poor quality washing machines.
Much respected AEG w/m (18 years old has just demised)
New Miele just ordered, the only way to go now for similar quality.
Thanks for confirming my views held for many years and my brother’s.
He also purchased Miele after seeing this site.

Thanks for taking the time and effort to provide such useful information. I regard myself as someone who’s well informed with above average intelligence but some of the points you have highlighted I wouldn’t have even considered ref. hot/cold water into washing machines. I guess the holy grail is what’s the best washine machine for <£500…….?

Thanks and the best of luck to you.

not so much a comment (although i do find this site most informative) but a question.
we bought a miele 865 w/m about 7 or 8 years ago, wich actually gets hammered!(2,3,4,washes EVERY day) NOTHING has gone wrong with it,I can,t work out why i have never had to replace the carbon brushes?
when we have bought cheaper in the past some machines needed
them doing every 6-12 months.
Is the a reason for this?

The reason is just down to quality. Miele’s parts are considerably stronger and more reliable than these other washing machines you mention. The carbon brushes on a Miele take a lot to wear down.

I bought an LG machine just under two years ago. The door has cracked, it turned out to be made of plastic which just bent and cracked before falling off. This is my fourth machine and each one’s ‘life’ seems to get shorter. I’m determined this time to try to find something reliable and sustainable. Your site has been by far the most useful and informative that I’ve come across, thank you so much.
