What we check, and what each check means

Each business is checked before it is listed, and every profile shows which of those checks it has completed - one by one, named, never rolled up into a single badge.

The set

Seven checks, named individually

These are the tiles on a profile. Each has its own mark and colour, here and there, so this page reads as the key to what you have already seen.

  • Identitycompleted
  • Business detailscompleted
  • Company detailscompleted
  • Public liabilitycompleted
  • Qualificationscompleted
  • Gas Safecompleted
  • Referencescompleted

All seven are shown here. On a profile the ones that business has completed are coloured and the rest grey - which means nothing is on file for them, not that anything was failed.

One by one

What each check means

Including the two that do not apply to every business, and what an absent tile actually tells you.

  • Identity

We confirm the person behind the business is who they say they are before the profile is published.

  • Business details

Trading name, contact details and the districts covered are checked before the listing goes live.

  • Company details

For a limited company, the registration details are checked. A sole trader has no company to check, so this one will not appear on their profile.

  • Public liability

Where a business provides evidence of cover, we record that we have seen it and when. We are not the insurer and we do not hold the policy.

  • Qualifications

Trade qualifications supplied by the business are recorded, with an expiry where one applies. An expired qualification stops showing as a completed check.

  • Gas Safe

Only relevant to a business working on gas appliances. Its absence on a profile usually means the business does not do gas work, not that something is missing.

  • References

Where a business supplies trade or customer references, they are checked before the listing goes live.

The limits

What a completed check does not mean

Whitegoods Help – Find an Engineer records what it has seen. Everything below is a thing a tick on a profile is not.

  • Not a guarantee

It is not a guarantee of the work. The business carries out the repair and is responsible for it, not us.

  • Not a pass mark

Two of the seven only apply to some businesses, so not every business will have all of them.

  • Not permanent

A qualification with an expiry stops counting once it lapses, and the check stops showing as completed.

  • Not an endorsement

We record what we have seen. We do not rank businesses by it or recommend one over another.

Reviews

How reviews are handled

Reviews are submitted by customers and moderated before publication. We may edit or remove content that breaches this policy; original submissions are retained, and review sentiment is never altered.

  • Checked before it appears

Every review is moderated for abuse and manipulation before it is published on a profile.

  • Sentiment never altered

Content that breaches the policy may be edited or removed. The original submission is kept either way, and what a customer meant is never changed.

  • Not removable on request

A business cannot have a review taken down for being unflattering. An unhappy review stays on the profile it was left on.
