Replacing a Washing Machine Belt

If your washing machine isn’t spinning, it could be due to a broken or worn-out belt. Fortunately, replacing the belt is a fairly simple process that you can do on your own with just a few basic tools.

Here’s how to remove and replace a washing machine belt.

Before we begin…

  1. Disconnect the appliance from any power supply and isolate the supply so it cannot be accidentally reconnected while you are working on it.
  2. Wear gloves! While appliances are nice and smooth on the exterior and pose no risk to cuts etc, the inside of appliances can be extremely sharp as they are not designed for consumers hands to be inside the machine.
  3. If you are not confident in attempting any repair to a domestic appliance, then call an expert.

Instructions:

  1. Unplug the washing machine from the power source: Before you begin, make sure that your washing machine is unplugged from the wall outlet to avoid any potential electrical shocks.
  2. Locate the belt: The belt is typically located at the bottom of the washing machine. You’ll need to remove the back or front panel of the machine to access it. Consult your owner’s manual or search online for instructions on how to remove the panel for your specific washing machine model.
  3. Remove the old belt: Once you have access to the belt, use a wrench or pliers to release the tension on the belt by loosening the bolt that holds the motor in place. Once the tension is released, slip the belt off the pulley and motor.
  4. Install the new belt: Slide the new belt onto the pulley and the motor shaft, making sure it’s properly aligned with the other pulleys in the machine. Tighten the bolt that holds the motor in place, creating tension on the belt.
  5. Test the machine: Before you reattach the panel and plug in the machine, give the belt a quick test to ensure that it’s properly installed and functioning. Turn the machine on and watch for any signs of slipping or looseness. If everything looks good, reattach the panel and plug the machine back in.

That’s it! Replacing a washing machine belt is a relatively simple process that can save you money and hassle over hiring a repairman. Just remember to follow all safety precautions and consult your owner’s manual or online resources for specific instructions on your washing machine model.
