Replacing a Washing Machine Heating Element

If you find that your washing machine is not heating up properly or not heating up at all, then it could be due to a faulty heating element. A heating element is a component that is responsible for heating the water inside the washing machine.

In this article, we will guide you through the process of removing and replacing a washing machine heating element.

Before we begin…

  1. Disconnect the appliance from any power supply and isolate the supply so it cannot be accidentally reconnected while you are working on it.
  2. Wear gloves! While appliances are nice and smooth on the exterior and pose no risk to cuts etc, the inside of appliances can be extremely sharp as they are not designed for consumers hands to be inside the machine.
  3. If you are not confident in attempting any repair to a domestic appliance, then call an expert.

Instructions:

  1. Locate the Heating Element – The heating element is usually located at the bottom of the washing machine, behind a panel. The location of the heating element can vary depending on the model of your washing machine. Refer to the user manual or manufacturer’s website to find out the exact location of the heating element.
  2. Remove the Heating Element – Once you have located the heating element, remove the screws that are holding the panel in place. Use a screwdriver to carefully remove the panel. You should now be able to see the heating element. The heating element is usually held in place by a bracket. Use a pair of pliers to carefully remove the screws or bolts that are holding the bracket in place. Once the bracket is removed, gently pull the heating element out of the washing machine.
  3. Test the Heating Element – Before replacing the heating element, it is a good idea to test it with a multimeter. Set the multimeter to the ohms setting and touch the probes to the terminals on the heating element. A good heating element should have a reading of around 10-50 ohms. If the reading is significantly higher or lower than this, then it is likely that the heating element is faulty and needs to be replaced.
  4. Replace the Heating Element – If the heating element is faulty, then it needs to be replaced. Install the new heating element by following the reverse steps of removing the old one. Attach the bracket to the new heating element and carefully slide it into place. Replace the panel and screw it back into place. Once the panel is secured, plug the washing machine back into the power source and turn it on.
  5. Test the Washing Machine – Once you have replaced the heating element, run a test cycle to make sure that it is working properly. Fill the washing machine with water and set it to the hottest cycle. Check to make sure that the water is heating up properly.

In conclusion, replacing a washing machine heating element is a relatively simple process that can be done with a few basic tools. However, if you are not confident in your ability to do so, then it is recommended that you seek the assistance of a professional engineer.
