Unblocking a Fridge Drain Hole
A fridge drain hole is a small opening in the back or bottom of your refrigerator that allows water to drain from the freezer compartment during the defrost cycle.
If this drain hole becomes blocked, water can accumulate in the fridge, leading to leaks and potentially even mould growth. Fortunately, unblocking a fridge drain hole is a relatively simple process that can be completed with just a few basic tools.
In this article, we’ll walk you through the steps to unblock a fridge drain hole and get your fridge back in good working order.
Before we begin…
- Disconnect the appliance from any power supply and isolate the supply so it cannot be accidentally reconnected while you are working on it.
- Wear gloves! While appliances are nice and smooth on the exterior and pose no risk to cuts etc, the inside of appliances can be extremely sharp as they are not designed for consumers hands to be inside the machine.
- If you are not confident in attempting any repair to a domestic appliance, then call an expert.
Materials needed:
- A bowl or container
- A funnel (optional)
- A turkey baster or similar device
- Hot water
- Vinegar (optional)
Instructions:
- Locate the drain hole – The drain hole is typically located at the back of the fridge, near the bottom, or in the freezer compartment. Consult your fridge manual if you’re unsure where to find it.
- Clear any visible debris – Using a small tool like a toothpick or a cotton swab, gently clear away any visible debris from the drain hole. Be careful not to push any debris further into the hole.
- Remove excess water – If there is water pooling in the fridge, use a turkey baster or similar device to remove as much of it as possible. You may need to do this several times to get all the water out.
- Flush the drain hole with hot water – Fill a bowl or container with hot water and carefully pour it into the drain hole. You can also use a funnel to make this process easier. The hot water should help to loosen and flush away any remaining debris.
- Repeat as necessary – If the drain hole is still blocked, repeat steps 2-4 as needed until the blockage is cleared. You can also try using a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar to help dissolve any stubborn blockages.
- Check for leaks – Once the drain hole is unblocked, check for any leaks in the fridge or freezer. If you notice any leaks, make sure the drain hole is properly aligned with the drain pan and adjust as necessary.
By following these simple steps, you should be able to unblock your fridge drain hole and keep your fridge running smoothly. Remember to regularly check and clean the drain hole to prevent future blockages and potential damage to your fridge.
