Appliance manufacturers repair charges and contact numbers
Mrs Washerhelp just spent the morning telephoning the major appliance manufacturers so I can update my Washing machine manufacturers charges page on Washerhelp. This page advises on appliance manufacturer’s service departments giving contact telephone numbers, web site links and the latest call out and labour prices.
There’s quite a range of prices charged bearing in mind they are all fixing the same type of appliances and covering the same areas. Labour-only charges range from a relatively cheap £55 + VAT by Electrolux, to £102 + VAT by Whirlpool. If your appliance turns out to be beyond economical repair – which is way too common these days – then charges range from £45 + VAT by AEG-Electrolux group covering AEG, Electrolux, Tricity Bendix, Zanussi repairs to a painful £109 including VAT for Hoover Candy appliances and £119.98 for Ariston, Indesit, Hotpoint & Creda engineers.
My original main reason for creating the page was to give potential buyers of washing machines and other white goods appliances information on how much the manufacturers charge for repairs once out of warranty. It’s only part of the equation but I believe it’s important information often overlooked, which should be taken into account when buying one of their appliances. It’s interesting to note that if you buy an AEG, Electrolux, Tricity Bendix or Zanussi washing machine the call out and labour charges on any future repairs are amongst the most reasonable, and interestingly, the most expensive tend to be the ones with the “free” 5 year parts guarantees. Even Miele, who are the most expensive appliance manufacturer and highly regarded as a premium brand only charge £92 which is less than Hoover & Hotpoint but if the repair takes over an hour prices go up by £5.28 each 6 minutes.
Although Ariston, Indesit, Hotpoint & Creda engineers are £10 dearer than Hoover Candy engineers at least their prices include parts, so they are potentially a lot cheaper. However, they charge exactly the same if their engineer writes it off saying it’s not worth repairing, they do say that this would be very unlikely though.
I must admit I’ve been a bit lax and haven’t updated this information for ages so I’ve been taken a little by surprise that a few manufacturers are offering the fixed price repairs on their out of guarantee appliances which includes parts, and some, like Hoover Candy and Hotpoint even offer to let you spread your payments.
Dyson, although not making their washing machine any more will still repair one for a fixed total price of £92.98. The only exception they mentioned was if the unique contra-rotating drum needed replacing which is no longer available. If that turned out to be the case they wouldn’t even charge for the visit.
Several appliance manufacturers also offer to sell you an insurance for your appliance, whereby they will include repairing it and then give breakdown cover for a year. These policies are very expensive, but they do let you spread payments over 10 months. If you have an appliance wanting a very expensive repair and are prepared to have it fixed it might not be much more to take out this cover and spread payments. However, for more palatable repairs it would add considerable cost.
