Mistakes of a repairman

A friend of mine works for a national retailer as a service engineer and was called out to look at a cooker under warranty. He turned up at the door in full uniform, with toolbox in hand - and a full bladder. The old lady opened the door and he greeted her warmly but announced, “I’m sorry luv, but I really need to use your toilet before I start”. The old lady stepped aside and pointed upstairs, “it’s the first door at the top of the stairs” she replied.

After relieving himself he returned downstairs, rubbed his hands together and said, “that’s better, now what’s the problem luv?”

“What problem?” she replied. “Your cooker” he retorted. “Oh dear” she said timidly, “I think you’ve got the wrong house”.

We’ve all done it, gone to the wrong house, but imagining what that poor old lady must have thought as he boldly announced he needed to use her toilet, and what she must have been thinking while this strange man was upstairs makes me laugh. I’m not heartless, I’m sure she was more bemused than scared.

On a similar subject - I remember once I was halfway through repairing a washing machine in someone’s kitchen when I needed to get a spare part from the van. Upon returning I noticed that when I opened the front door there was one of those warning chimes that announce someone’s opened the door. That’s funny I thought, I don’t remember hearing that before. I glanced into the kitchen as I stepped into the hallway and the absence of a half-stripped-down washing machine advised me I’d walked into the wrong house - oops.

I managed to make a hasty retreat before anyone caught me.
