Baby badly burned by washing machine detergent

This is an unfortunate incident, the Daily Record is reporting that a 17-month-old child (Taylor Mills) has apparently been burned by the gel in a washing machine detergent Ariel Excel. A spokesman for Proctor & Gamble who make the detergent in question are reported to have said: “All our products are extensively researched and are safe to use as directed.”

Installing a washing machine or dishwasher in basement

Can a washing machine (or dishwasher) pump up from a basement up to the grate?

There’s no guarantee any washing machine will pump this far up as they are all only designed to pump a few feet. Most will pump higher, but at a reduced rate. There’s no need for manufacturers to make any washing machine pump capable of pumping that high so they don’t. I would expect a dishwasher could fare even worse.

Frost free freezers and automatic defrosting fridges, how do they work?

Frost free fridge freezers are very popular and auto defrosting fridges are a great convenience. In a frost free appliance the cold air is blown round the freezer using a fan. On modern refrigeration the evaporator (which is the plate that gets cold) is hidden behind the plastic wall inside at the back of the food shelves. When working correctly you can usually see small beads of ice randomly scattered on the back wall unless it’s in a defrost cycle when you may see water.

Buying appliances online expected to grow

I’ve just read that online shopping is, “bucking the recession and on course to notch up sales of £31.2 billion – or 10% of all retail spending by 2013″. This was a report on research carried out by Verdict Research.

Do we really need to dump our old inefficient appliances to save money and the world?

There is a big campaign by AMDEA trying to persuade us to throw away our old inefficient appliances and buy new more efficient ones. They claim we will be helping save the earth and will save ourselves lots of money too. However, although I agree that new appliances are usually more efficient I have more difficulty in accepting that it makes sense to throw away a perfectly good white goods appliance if it is working okay in order to save either money or save the environment.
