Do new washing machines use the same hoses and plumbing?

They should all use standard sizes and fittings but there are variances in design across different manufacturers and a few potential problems as discussed in this article. You should always get new fill hoses with your washing machine though the existing fill hoses will still fit, however, normally you would fit the new hoses supplied if possible.

Washing machines and associated problems with sizes

Although some extra large capacity washing machines have bigger than normal dimensions the majority of standard UK front-loading washing machines are roughly 850mm high, and 595 to 600mm wide. They are designed to fit into a standard size kitchen width space of 600 mm (60 cm) which suits the majority of people, but some find they have smaller spaces which modern appliances won’t fit into.

Washing not being cleaned properly in washer

If laundry is not getting cleaned properly or comes out with marks on most people blame the washing machine. But there are more explanations for this problem where the user is at fault than where the washing machine is at fault.

Get rid of washing machine smells

This article looks at how to get rid of mouldy, musty or bad smells from washing machines, and points to the causes so as to protect from the problem in the first place or prevent re-occurrence.

Washing machine jumps around and bangs on spin

There are two possible causes for a washing machine jumping around. Either the load is unbalanced, or a fault is preventing the machine from balancing the load (or causing the motor to surge into spin when it shouldn’t), which causes the drum to be flung around inside. The occasional jumping around may not be anything to worry about, but regular or severe occurrences should be a cause for concern and can cause expensive damage to your washing machine if ignored.

Loading a washing machine

If you overload a washing machine it can cause physical problems, but it will also affect the efficiency of the wash. An overfilled washing machine can result in the laundry moving round in one large mass. The clothes will not agitate against each other and the washing machine detergent won't be able to circulate or dissolve properly. The washing will not be washed properly. With some liquid detergents there can also be potential serious consequences – Baby badly burned by washing machine detergent.

Washing machine instruction books and user manuals

There are lots of links to most appliance user manual download sites lower down on this page but read this advice before jumping in or you might struggle to find your manual.

What causes too much foam in the washing machine?

Over foaming in washing machine

Some people have problems with excessive foam in the washing machine and think the washing machine is at fault. However, the cause is likely to be due to the detergent – or how the detergent is being used.

Apart from the nuisance of foam leaking out of the dispenser drawer, too much foam can actually prevent the clothes from getting properly clean.

Washing machine door glass exploded

Sensationalist headlines?

Has your washing machine door glass exploded? There is currently a lot of media interest in an article which I wrote back in 2008 warning consumers of the dangers from shattered glass from washing machines where the door glass “exploded” – (Washing machine exploding door glass danger). The article originally highlighted the case of a small child who had fallen against an open washing machine door causing it to break off, and because the flooring underneath was tiled the glass shattered into very dangerous shards of glass and she was cut.
